Catfused 03:37
Untitled 03:18

Noboot delivers fantastic, thick, low-slung electro funk on the dreamy scope of “Consciousness”. Aptly named, there is a living, breathing quality to the whole of the album. Stylistically rooted in electro, Noboot incorporates elements of tech house, ambient, classical, and even some cosmic otherworldliness that would not be out of place on the Spectrum Spools label. The melodies that grace these pieces have a stately aura to them, and they are given plenty of room to roam. With a wide variety of layers, he crafts an entire universe one that has a great realness to all of it.

References abound throughout the whole of the album, as Noboot’s fondness for 80s synth pop is readily apparent. During certain moments he touches upon the brilliance of Com Truise’s patient, persistent grooves. Also akin to Com Truise, there is a sense of cinematic majesty that frames the work. On the old school side of things, his work shows lessons learned from the likes of Tangerine Dream in the way that the sounds have an organic buildup while sidestepping predictable crescendos for something livelier.

A late-night atmosphere comes into focus in the beginning of “What else is there”. Gentle synthesizer washes further add to the peaceful display. His patience is admirable for he gives enough time for the song’s soul to emerge before embarking on some deeply satisfying driving rhythms. Much peppier and akin to a lost-long early 90s Aphex Twin track is the irresistibly joyous “Living In The City” which radiates a sense of pure contentment. “Mystic Vision” has a cyclical approach as it pushes the tempos into an acid techno flavor, with the ambience in the background gaining an almost shoegaze-like glow to it.

Beats hit hard on the playful “Catfused”. One of the highlights of the album, his understanding of chord progression proves to be masterful as there is a lot of heart infused within the track. With a video game-like cadence comes the highly ornate, almost baroque, arrangement of “Untitiled”. Easy to get lost in “Aino (Feat. Ethicals)” is a sprawling ambitious work. Here there is a bit of a classical cadence while the song’s reiterations bring the main theme into view with so much patience behind it. The shuffle proves to be addictive as it has a warmth that is beguiling. Bringing the whole thing to a close without needing to drop a single beat is the ambient symphony of “Consciousness”.

“Consciousness” shows off the deft skill of Noboot in exploring such a neon-hued blissful state.
